As of Sept 08 2 spans of the bridge remain. A pin inspection will be done. If they pass, well, they probably will be saved. Possibly a footbridge will be built to the 2 spans. Regardless, many people hope that the 2 spans can remain. The collapsed span is nearby and will have to be removed. The Bridge Authority in charge of the bridge has been seeking donations. Sutliff Bridge is a special place. Beautiful even with 2 spans. SAVE THE BRIDGE!!!

I noticed when I was there a few years ago they had placed the 1891 King Bridge Co. plaques on the new bridge. Talk about adding insult to injury.

Bill, the picture you posted here is that of the old Central Bridge. It was built in 1891 and was like the first of its kind cantaleiver through truss. My great-grandfather collected tolls there until they discontinued. Pics of this bring back memories of crossing to visit family. Even with the distinction of this bridge nothing was done to save it and it was lost in 1992. The bridge description here may be an offtrack one of the L&N Bridge.

I am happy somebody found and posted a pic of this classic Cincinatti bridge. It was a shame it was dynamited then replaced with the ugly truss that sits there now.

There are several Lafayette Bridge Co. spans remaining, and many do still have builder plates on them. Often the county road departments would take them down for fear of them falling....you know that dirty word LIABILITY. I have come across them stored in highway garages on some occasions. A good engineering firm that does a rehab the right way will have the plates recast or replicated from a similar span.

There was still an original builder’s plate on the bridge before restoration, but it was full of bullet holes.

I’m going to say that these are reproductions. Very nice ones at that, a detail that is usually overlooked.

Also, the bridge now has a wood floor rather than corrugated steel covered with asphalt as before.

This bridge was originally built to replace Hayes Ferry crossing the river at this point. During the construction of Douglas Dam in 1942 it was extensively rebuilt including several concrete appproach spans on the east end. Only one steel span was retained.

Very recently a new concrete bridge was constructed by Britton Bridge Co to replace it, and the old bridge was removed.

One night about nine years ago a friend and I had walked out on this bridge and were greeted by the Thebes cop when we walked back to my car. He threatend to arrest us but only gave us a ticket to appear in Alexander County court later that month. Anyway, we got out of going to court and I never tresspassed onto railroad property again. The Thebes bridge is massive and will last another 100 years!

It seems a terrible waste, to destroy the Living Monument/Memorial, to those who died, (and their surviving relatives, and friends), on that Fateful Day (May 9, 1980).

A sign of the times indeed.

Budget Shortfalls, and Beurocratic Loopholes.

How sad is it the families who have built traditions, and enjoyed the benefits of this glorious, and magnificent "State Park", will soon lose another example of what is slowly becoming a thing of the past in todays society!

Thank goodness our Forefathers and Ancestors, had the good sense to save what little we have left now of our past, and God Bless Future generations, when they look back and realize the history that was lost, in this monumental blunder!

In the Report from FDOT, it says that their Engineer had determined the Bridge was no longer worth saving (not cost effective)...

I say that decision should have been left to the citizens of the Greater Tampa Bay, and the State Of Florida!

Sincerly

There have been several disappearances on and around Old Alton Bridge. Most notably, one that occurred November 15th 1967. The Denton newspaper at the time did an article on a mustang found abandoned on the bridge and there were lots of people that reported other missing persons linked to the bridge and the "Goatman."

The story is that Klansmen raided the house of the Goatman, Oscar Washburn, and killed his family after attempting to lynch him over the side. The legend says that he disappeared over the side and now attacks anyone who crosses the bridge at night in an effort to protect his family.

The date for this bridge seems to have been a discussion in the past. I have done a little research on this structure and this is my conclusion on the topic.

The information plaque on the bridge states the bridge was built in 1925. This is the year the bridge was constructed, but the bridge did not open until early 1926.

The current bridge replaced an older structure that was built in 1903-04. This older bridge is probably the source of confusion for the date of the current bridge.

This is the only remaining highway steel truss possibly in the NW Ohio area. UCEB's have replaced the rest along the Maumee and its tributary streams. The bridge at Waterville remains one of my favorite crossings when I am in the Toledo area coming or going. Here is the five span truss on a hot and humid late August afternoon. I got a good shot of the builder's plaque. The Waterville bridge was built in 1948. This bridge looks in decent shape and would be angry if this becomes an UCEB!

In looking closer at the pictures of this bridge I noticed an identical feature in this bridge to the Hamilton Road Bridge in Allen Co., IN. The ends of the floor beams feature a design that tells me this is a Smith Bridge Co. span. That would also date this bridge to the 1880's, since Smith Bridge became the Toledo Bridge Co. around 1890.

These pictures show the floor beam end and the portal details on the Hamilton Road Bridge.

This description appears to be the arch bridge located at Maumee, Ohio. It has been replaced a few years ago with a concrete structure simular to the one in Napoleon, Ohio. The new bridge is a wider and is designed in what is called a "replica bridge". Modern construction with design elements taking cues from the past. I will send pics of the replacement bridge in the near future.

I don't think this is around anymore. The Google satellite photo doesn't show it, and the road now appears to be abandoned well south of the creek.

Turns out repairs have started! This picture is from April 25th 2008. I had no idea they were doing this! Good thing I went when I did in February. Can't wait to see it when it's done!

Here is some interesting information I found that is dated July 5th 2006.

Tripple-Whipple - Bridge #95 - Last December the Transportation Dept. received an official letter from INDOT regarding the bridge over Laughery Creek, the Tripple-Whipple Bridge. At that time, the Board of Commissioners authorized Todd Listerman to seek additional funds for Transportation Enhancement for additional construction dollar costs where originally they were given approximately $600,000 ten years ago. The construction costs have increased and INDOT has approved an additional $673,000 in federal Transportation Enhancement funds to fund the rehabilitation of the Tripple-Whipple Bridge. The county is in the process of meeting with INDOT at the Seymour district and the county’s consultant which is Barth & Associates to figure out what the last final steps they need to accomplish. The county will also meet with Ohio County to get the final grievance signed to pay their share of the (20% for construction dollars on Bridge #95.

They also plan on finishing the paperwork on the right-of-way necessary needed to do the work on Dearborn County’s side of the bridge. There have been discussions but the county has held off on finalizing the right-of-way paperwork until they had the grant in hand. Now that the grant is in hand, they will start that paperwork as well.

Todd mentioned that the Bridge #95 would be a part of the pedestrian connection – where it will be widened as part of the rehabilitation.

I visited this bridge today thinking that it was closed, but it was open to traffic. The quickest way to visit it is to take Hwy 77 south of Douglass to 230th street. Go west about three quarters of a mile, and then when the road tees, go south. The road will wind around, and then there is the bridge. The route I just listed is TREACHEROUS! Just faster to get there than the way I went. Take a truck! the roads on either side of the bridge aren't closed, per se: just low maintenance.

I've been browsing this site and just found this page. I looked at the link posted below, and apparently the bridge is now closed, to allow construction of the new one to continue. Here's the site again:

This bridge should be in another category as well, Wrought Iron. Here's the DRJTBC's page on it:

I went looking for this bridge today. It sits on Private property over their driveway. I asked to take the photo, and the lady was very nice. Directions: K 68 hwy to Somerset. N. on somerset. Follow curve in road to right(east). Sits on Left side before road turns North again.

I was looking at pictures of this bridge on Flickr and other sites, and I'm not sure if it's a cantilever deck truss or not. Here's two pictures of it on Flickr:

The bridge appears to be a simple deck Warren truss, similar to the former I-35W bridge, only a lot smaller.

old stone bridge unknown origin

I am looking for information about an old stone bridge on my property in Calhoun County, Illinois. The state highway was straightened in 1930, and the old stone bridge was no longer used. Nobody seems to know when it was built, though. It is located between Kampsville and Michael, along Route 100.

While the bridge is eight hundred feet long, what was really interesting is that it had a five ton weight limit which was strictly enforced by having policemen monitor both ends of the bridge full time. Is the bridge really safe? I can only assume the third picture shows its more sturdy replacement

This bridge has been torn down and replaced with a two-lane concrete bridge.
